At-home Beginner Yoga Class Tips
Healthy Yoga at Home Class Tips
Arrive early: Try to be ready on your mat 10-15 minutes before the live class starts. If you have any concerns or injuries please advise your teacher before the class begins (you can do this by clicking on the Zoom ‘live chat’ key at the bottom of your screen). If you have any existing or past injuries, please let the teacher know, to give appropriate modification advice. Please seek advice from your doctor or physiotherapist if you are unsure of your limitations.
Dress comfortably: Wear loose clothing in our live yoga online classes that allow the arms and legs to move freely in yoga poses, including no shoes.
Set up your space: Set up your chosen space or room to reflect peace and mindfulness, for the best live online experience. You can do so by using an essential oil diffuser or by burning natural candles. Aim for soft or natural lighting to set a calming mood and enhance your practice. Don’t forget to put your phone on silent.
Yoga props: Sometimes the live stream class requires props such as blocks, straps, blankets, and cushions to allow the body to relax and go deeper into a pose. Keep these props near your mat for easy access.
Breathing: The most important thing in your live class is to focus on your breathing. In Kevala Yoga, we breathe slowly and evenly through our nostrils. Focus on keeping your face and neck relaxed. You are welcome to begin your yoga journey using natural breathing until you learn nostril breathing techniques.
Go at your own pace: Remember to go at your own pace and rest anytime that is necessary. This is your practice, your body, and your choices.
Best at-home Beginner Yoga Class Tips
Once you have attended a few live beginner yoga classes, use the tips below to help you progress.
Be patient: When we are patient, the body and mind will open and strengthen. If we push too hard, the body and mind tighten and limit our yoga practice progress. Instead, we will focus on learning to let go of our thoughts and stay mindful of our breathing.
Focus on your breathing: This is the golden rule, always focus on your breathing, your breath is like a barometer for your body. Breathing is very important for a beginner yoga student.
Mindfully move: We will move in and out of the yoga poses with full awareness and slowly. As a yoga beginner take time to feel how your body parts move, which poses feel easy and which feel tight. By doing so, you will not harm your physical being. Simply listen to the messages your body is communicating to you and enjoy the journey of self-discovery.
Yoga Postures: Yoga postures should be performed with steadiness, comfort, and awareness. The main goal is achieving a balance between effort and ease while knowing your physical limits. Remember your breathing is your priority.
How you may feel after class: When you finish a yoga class you should feel calmer, more open, relaxed, and even energized. Always let the teacher know if you feel anything else that you may be unsure about.
How often should I attend? To progress in your yoga, we suggest that you start with 2-3 classes per week at a minimum. If you can only attend one to start, the teacher can provide you with yoga poses to practice at home.
How do I know if I am progressing? Progress can be found in many different ways. Beginner yoga students may notice that they begin to feel more relaxed in their body, mind, and breathing while holding a pose or going deeper into a pose. You may also experience a positive change in thinking off the mat, such as feeling nourished in your mind and tapping into productive mindfulness.
