Essential Oils For Health and Healing
Essential Oils and Yoga for Natural Healing
Did you know about the many health and relaxation benefits of essential oils? Not only can they be used as a natural remedy or perfume, but they may also assist with natural healing, combined with yoga and meditation practices.
Essential oils are, at their purest, plant extracts that capture their fragrance and properties. Kevala Health’s favorites are lavender, sandalwood, myrtle, orange, and peppermint. Certain essential oils work best for specific uses, such as antiviral, antifungal, or calming qualities. Information on Kevala essential oil blends.
Therapy involving essential oils is known as ‘Aromatherapy’, traditionally incorporating oils and other natural aromas as part of a relaxation exercise. This has been known to improve the participant’s health and mood. You may wish to partake in Aromatherapy by using your favorite calming essential oil in a massage, applying it to your skin, or simply inhaling the scent.
We always recommend purchasing 100% organic and locally made essential oils where possible, to support your community and the environment. When you combine yoga and breathwork with essential oils together you create powerful healing effects on the mind and body.
5 Ways Essential Oils and Yoga Improve Health
1. Calm the mind
First and foremost, essential oils can be used for their relaxing and calming properties. The popular Lavender essential oil is known as one of the most soothing essential oils, offering relaxation through aromatic or topical treatment. Try incorporating Lavender oil into your daily routines to assist with releasing tension, reducing anxiety, improving sleep, and promoting positive moods.
You may wish to dispense the scent through an essential oil diffuser while relaxing in your living space, or in your room to prepare for bed. You can also pop a few drops into a warm bath to help melt your tension away, as the scent infuses the steam. If you are after a more portable approach, you can simply inhale it when you wish to feel at ease. As scent is linked to emotion, forming this calming connection can signal to your body to lower its blood pressure and heart rate.
We recommend mixing it with Jojoba carrier oil and placing it around the back of the neck to help you sleep, reduce headaches, and before you practice your yoga and meditation to help the mind relax.
2. Reducing Anxiety and Depression
Aromatherapy can be used as a pharmaceutical-free alternative to aiding anxiety and depression. Essential oils and yoga together are a match made in heaven. Smelling the aromas of oils like Lavender, Bergamot, Jasmine, Lime, and Frankincense in your yoga and meditation awakens your senses and mind, which helps to relax the body.
One of my favorite and most versatile essential oils for anxiety and depression is bergamot, lemon, lime, and orange. These citrus oils can assist with feelings of positivity and ease. This may help to reduce the release of negative stress hormones, especially when used as part of Aromatherapy. Try diffusing the scent in settings where you wish to feel more at ease or add a few drops of it into massage oil before use. For immediate use, you can inhale directly from the oil bottle or a cotton ball dabbed in an oil mixture.
Other common essential oils used to relieve anxiety and depression are Ylang Ylang, Chamomile, Sweet Orange, and Rosemary essential oil.

3. Soothe sore muscles
The best essential oils to help you relax sore muscles and tightness are; Lavender, Wintergreen, Cypress, Basil, Black pepper, and Sandalwood.
If you are new to yoga, you will learn to breathe and stretch correctly. When combined with your essential oil blend where you are tight, will help you soothe your muscles and mind. Using essential oils to calm a busy mind will help you relax your muscles more.
4. Enhances skin health
Certain essential oils have the power to moisturize, improve acne, and alleviate itching or rashes on our skin.
Lavender has been known to have anti-inflammatory properties to reduce redness of the skin or hydrate dry skin. Sandalwood and myrtle oil may be used to combat acne and other imbalances to support skin health.
5. Improve breathing and awareness
Using different yoga breathing techniques and essential oils will help you improve your breathing. When you become more aware of your breathing and the breathing is more efficient, your energy improves. Another benefit of good breathing is improved circulation in the body.
The best essential oils for improved breathing are; Frankincense, Rosemary, Myrrh, peppermint, and lemon.
You can use essential oils as your signature perfume to make you feel confident and ready for the day ahead. Unfortunately, synthetic perfumes can be riddled with alcohol and toxins which may hurt the planet and your skin. Luckily, using essential oils as perfume ensures a long-lasting scent with no risk of irritating sensitive skin.
Before applying any essential oil directly to your skin, we always recommend doing an allergy test. To do this, simply dilute the oil with double the amount of water and proceed to rub a small amount of the mixture into your forearm. If there is no allergic response within 48 hours, you may continue to use the oil at its full potential.
Using essential oils will help you detox your life, body, and mind. You will also save money on expensive and toxic commercial perfumes.
When practicing meditation, we recommend dimming the lights and diffusing a calming blend of oils such as Lavender or Sandalwood. By stimulating scent, you can connect with your bodily senses on a deeper level. You can learn more about meditation techniques in this blog. Or listen to Jodie’s calming Chakra Meditation video.
Having an essential oil diffusing in your space may also elevate feelings of optimism, gratitude, and positivity to boost your yoga session. We encourage you to diffuse your favorite calming scent while working on your practice to derive its highest benefits.
