5 Beginner Tips for Yoga and Pilates Classes

There are many benefits of practicing regular online yoga for your body and mind. However, sometimes it may feel daunting to begin. We suggest that you start by participating in a minimum of 2-3 classes per week under the guidance of a teacher. It is also recommended to always seek medical advice from your doctor or physiotherapist before you start your Yoga journey if you are unsure of your physical limitations.

Top 5 Safety Tips for Live Yoga and Pilates Classes

Tip 1: Be on Your Mat Early

It’s always best to set up 5-10 minutes before the class starts. This way, you have time to properly prepare, breathe and take in your surroundings. 

If you have any concerns or prior injuries, it’s important to advise your teacher before the class begins. By doing so, your teacher can provide you with modifications so that you aren’t putting any strain on your injuries. You are ensuring that you will experience a beneficial, enjoyable session. You can send the Yoga teacher a message using the chat icon at the bottom of the Zoom screen if you have any concerns or even a request. This way you will feel safe and supported in these yoga or pilates live-stream classes and progress further.

Tip 2: Dress Comfortably and Come Prepared

Wearing comfortable clothing is highly encouraged. As a general rule, any typical workout clothes will be suitable for your online Kevala Yoga class. The best thing is you don’t need to wear shoes.

When it comes to choosing a yoga mat, it’s important to select one that prevents you from slipping out of your pose. This is key as it provides a stable base for holding certain stances and transitioning between poses. Also, find a yoga mat that is the right thickness for your body to relax.

Certain classes will require props such as straps, bands, blankets, or cushions to help the body to relax and go deeper into a pose. Again, the teacher will advise you before class and you will find all the things at home that can be used. That’s why it is great doing these online live classes at home, as you have all the equipment you need.

Tip 3: Set up Your Space

It is important to set up your space to reflect peace and mindfulness. An easy way to do this is to put your phone on silent and have a water bottle nearby if you feel you may need one, especially in hotter weather.

When setting up for online Yoga at home, you can enhance the space by placing an essential oil diffuser in the room or burning natural scented candles. Aim for soft or natural lighting to create a calm, ambient environment. Or even place some fresh-smelling flowers in your room. You can create your own special space for your live class.

Tip 4: Go at Your Own Pace

One of our foremost pieces of advice is to always go at your own pace. Only practice poses for as long as they feel comfortable and rest anytime that you feel necessary. 

Remember, this is your practice, your body, and your choices.

When we are patient with ourselves, the body and mind are more likely to open up and strengthen. When we push ourselves too hard, we are prohibiting progress as our being tenses and limits itself. Instead, we propose that you focus on the learning aspect of Yoga and stay mindful of your breathing. By starting with an open mind, you are far likelier to enjoy your Yoga journey and for it to have longevity. 

Tip 5: Focus on Breathing and Awareness

The golden rule of beginner Yoga is to always focus on breathing as it will guide you through the class.

In Kevala Yoga, we concentrate on breathing slowly, deeply, and evenly through our nostrils. Consciously keep your face and neck relaxed as you do so. We understand that this may feel unnatural to start, so you are welcome to begin by using natural breathing until you learn nostril breathing techniques.

As you move in and out of poses, try to do so with full awareness and in a slow, measured manner. Take the time to register how your body parts feel as they move and which poses feel easier or tighter. Listen to what your body is communicating to you and adjust accordingly. This way, you are far less likely to harm your physical being. 

One of the core aspects of starting a strong yoga practice is to engage with yoga regularly. Try your best to maintain motivation and remember that doing a little bit each day is much better than doing nothing. So, if you find yourself only with a spare 15-30 minutes per day, we encourage you to whip out your mat and practice a guided home session.
